I noticed the following words on the Welcome To Politika message:

We use this board to run polls and elect new staff members,...

Does this mean the Keep is moving back to elected staffers?

It does not, unless I didn't get the memo. A memo that I'd more than likely be the one to write. : )

We'll adjust the 'Welcome to the Politika board' message accordingly.

I do have a question though...

Why don't we elect our staff members anymore? It seems like a fairer system, in my point of view...

But, we all know how much my opinion means. It IS a question I'd like answered though.

I'd guess it to be because this way it's not so much of a popularity thing, there aren't huge lists of candidates who just want to be mod so they can /kick people everywhere, and the admins have a bit more control over the whole process so they can just go "You seem to be pretty fair/smart/knowing of the rules and willing to help uphold them. Want to?" "Er, sure." "Okay, there'll be a poll on your performance in a couple weeks. Don't make us regret this."

At least, that's as far as I can tell, and that's how I guess the conversation before somebody gets /promoted goes. I have no complaints about it, partially because of the saying about those who pursue power being the least deserving, and partially because it just keeps there from being this no-win situation where a whole bunch of people apply, but all of them suck.

I'm an Ombudsman. I investigate; I only very rarely legislate (and only in a committee, no man is an island and all that).

Huh. Makes sense, I suppose.

There was a fiasco over the issue a couple years back, when the mods changed from an election system to a "we select" system without asking the userbase, and there were several complaints. It got entrenched because nobody bitched hard enough, and eventually even the performance polls got dropped.

Also, of course, there's cases where people could probably win an election if they stood for it, but whose election would trigger more drama than the existing mods really want to deal with.
