So, I'm looking at the rooms and profiles as I tend to do, and I can't help be be reminded of a trend that's still going strong. What's with the modern/realistic only thing going on in the Keep? Not that I mind a level of realism or the like, and certainly don't think that modern characters should be excluded. I'm just wondering as to why there's a slight feeling bordering on contempt for anyone who plays something different.
Ignoring the usual half/demon/angel/Goku/ent/neko thing, and since I'm not keen on shaking my cane and saying 'when I was a young Keepster', I'll just leave this poorly conceived rant as an open thread to discuss this and similar fads in the global Keep community.
(Firefox wants me to fix my spelling of Goku. First suggestion? Gook. Did McCain work for Mozilla?)

There have been plenty of trends that come and go. This one is interesting because you'd think "modern" roleplay would be like, crime and intrigue, but it's people sitting around in a cafe drinking lattes.
Not that the fantasy in the Keep is much different, it's angels, demons and guys with swords hanging around drinking "blood wyne"

He was, however briefly, reported to have invented the Blackberry. Heh. I don't RP enough, if at all, nowaday to have noticed trends like that. But I'll always stick to freeform. -G

These things just tend to echo whatever is going on in nerd culture. Fantasy peaked with (possibly before) the LotR movies, which was a culmination of probably a decade of building in terms of media. Its kind of hard to top, so a lot of production shifted over to modern-ish fictions like HP, Hell Boy, Constantine, Sin City. There has also been a surge in x-Punk, and so its going to be reflected in the RP community because these are the settings on peoples mind.

The modern thing is not that dissimilar to the surge of popularity for vampires, drow, boy wizards and slaves, that we have seen in the past.
Some are of the above are perennial - Drow, elves, and vampires come to mind for things we keep seeing come back to the top.

One thing I'll say for labour; & that is, that it isn't as offensive as the corresponding mutatory force which now threatens culture in America. I refer to the force of business as a dominating motive in life, & a persistent absorber of the strongest creative energies of the American people. -Lovecraft

There will always be a new, hot anime going around with RPs following it, too. Can't forget that one.

I went from mostly fantasy characters to mostly modern characters over the year, but I still see plenty of wizards.

It's interesting how Marvel stuff has cropped up a bit, starting around the same time as Civil War, I think.
Civil War may have been kind of sucky but the best thing about it is that it increased the "coolness" of Marvel's non-mutants in general

I think it's important to remember that "modern" does not mean "non-fantasy". Look at D20 Modern, Call of Cthulhu, Shadow Run, etc. All games set in a 'real world earth' setting ranging from 1900 to 2075, and all having a variation of magic or psionics of some sort. All three of those games have monsters as well. With Shadowrun in particular it's completely reasonable to see a wizard packing a revolver just in case his spells fail--which is rockin'.

Speaking of which, the Marvel universe is so much fun to game in with a near limitless amount of things you can create and do. I'm running a Marvel Superheroes campaign right now, and it's definitely awesome.

I've always liked modern rp, but it is a pet peeve of mine when people think it means "realism only". Modern fantasy, sci fi, these are things I enjoy. My longest running character here was a modern day mage. For some reason though, modern rp seems to tend towards nightclubs and gay love stories lately. Not exactly sure why that is...
Interesting (to me anyway) sidenote, I don't think I've ever seen someone here even attempt intrigue. And cops aren't worth the effort, because everyone here is a badass criminal whom no cell can hold. Hence all the bounty hunters. Not that death ever stops anyone.

I'm rather surprised to note that I haven't really ever played any purely high fantasy characters.

Because these people have no lives and those things ARE a fantasy to them. I'm rather surprised to note that I haven't really ever played any purely high fantasy characters. I've played plenty of fantasy characters, but I've never played any "FORSOOTH, MY LIEGE!" types. I guess they're more like urban or dark fantasy characters. High fantasy gets a bad rap because most people do it in the Tolkien ripoff mode, but there's plenty of options.
