So a thought occurs to me as I listen to some videogame OSTs (being the nerd I am).

Top of my list of awesome videogame soundtracks are Gunstar Heroes, Interstate 76, and Killer 7.

However, there ARE other games out there where even if the game itself is mediocre, you've sat there and listened to the music and gone 'holy shit I like this'.

So, discuss. What are your favourite videogame soundtracks of all time? What particular games, be they good, average, or awful, have stuck with you purely because of the incredible music that played in them?

It doesn't have to be modern, it can be old, it can be NES or C64 era. But it has to be a game where you've sat there with the game paused, or just sitting idling in one particular part, or you've gone into the 'Sound Test' (for you SNES and Megadrive owners out there for ) JUST to listen to the music... whatever.

Post your favourite awesome music endowed videogames here.

I liked a lot of the stuff from Megaman Legends 2, mostly the tracks that correspond with Elysium. The residential area, Mother Zone, etc.

Secret of Mana was fantastic and had a crapload of cool and moving songs, more than I feel like listing. It was played a lot when I was young so I sort of grew up with them.

Pokemon Gold/Silver had great music everywhere, same youth-influence as above as well.

There are some really cool gradius/salamander mixes you can find on galbadia. They sound nice.

For the rest it's hard to single any one game out as having a bunch of tracks I liked, kind of more scattered. So as for awesome individual tracks...

Nightshade/Kunoichi- Vengeful Beauty.
Shinobi- Red Blade.
Megaman 7- Wily Stage 2.
SAB2- For True Story.
Banjo Kazooie- Treasure Trove Cove (stuck in my head from 4th grade to 6th, kid you not.) Rusty Bucket Bay, Click Clock Wood.

Can't think of any more offhand.

to add a few more, good one for spotting Secret of Mana, Seiken Densetsu 3 also had similarly beautiful music in it too.

Wily Stage 2 from Megaman 2 is also epic tunage. Hell, it's what Okkussenman is based on. Cheesy

But generally speaking Megaman 2 had fantastic music, as did Megaman 3. Some seriously memorable tunes.

On a more recent note, Ace Combat 4: Distant Thunder and Radiant Silvergun had honestly EPIC tracks to listen to. Somegtimes in AC4 I'd just fly around listening to the awesome audio. The Theme for the Megalith in that game is AWE INSPIRING.

The Sonic the HEdgehog games had some great tunes too, (Sonic 1 to Sonic 3&K that is. Can't speak of the other, later games, haven't played them much).

Also Chrono Cross had some great music by Yasunori Mitsuda, a substantial proportion of which came originally from the unreleased-in-the-west 'Choose your own adventure'-styled game 'Radical Dreamers' Square made shortly before Chrono Cross was released, for the SNES.

Okay, Metal Gear Solid, as a series, has damn good music, too.

I agree with MGS.
FF3 is also awesome.
Contra, for the NES

And of course, Super Mario World for the SNES.

Edit:
How could I forget Chrono Trigger, thank you Rusti.

C'mon now, that's a little harsh. I'm definetly not a japanophile. I grew up playing those games. I barely even play video games anymore. I make music. From my point I see fond memories of my childhood, and damn good, catchy compositions.

My iPod, btw, is FULL of Pink Floyd and IDM

I'll allow Skaven of Future Crew because he also did music for some of the Unreal games. And that music was pretty fucking badass too.

Also if you haven't already ( I can't recall if it's been mentioned ), but the Guilty Gear series has incredible music. Seriously check out "No Mercy" from GGXX. Some awesome metal right there.

I can't count how many times I've actually beaten Chrono Trigger and I still love the music. Same thing with Chrono Cross. Call me what you will, but I actually have the Chrono Cross OST. It's definitely some of the best video game music out there in my opinion. Final Fantasy 6 (FF3 for the SNES, which is what I mostly played it on) has some wonderful music. Actually, pretty much anything Nobuo Uematsu has done is great.

Also, Jeremy Soule is a great video game composer who has done the music for The Elder Scrolls series as well as Guild Wars, Knights of the Old Republic, and the Harry Potter series. He's also got a version of the FF6 World of Balance theme that's excellent.

As far as classic gaming goes, nothing can beat the Mario or Legend of Zelda themes. Metroid also has some pretty memorable tunes, too.

I think he did some NWN music too, which was pretty nice. Not entirely certain though.

Correct, and I dislike it.

Ok so this: http://www.queststudios.com/ is Quest Studios, which has all those classic Sierra soundtracks like King's Quest, Space Quest, Quest for Glory, Leisure Suit Larry and more. It also has them in a wide variety of formats so you can nerd it up with your .ogg if you really wanted to. It also has remixes.

The opening sequence to the original Wild Arms game on playstation, and some of the infectious 50's music in Fallout 3. Killing things to cheerful choruses in a burnt out wasteland? Somehow epic.

Yeah. The Wild Arms opening was awesome, though only partly because of the music.
