Okay, so Nexxushost went down entirely for a little bit last night. But hey, that's okay.
It was back up really soon.

However just incase this happens again, or we get protracted Nexxushost outage again, there is a backup chat that isn't realms or anything like that.

http://thespirerpg.co.uk

Now, it uses PHPMyChat too, but it's been forked by Rycuda an old ex-user of tK. The server's nice and stable, as far as I can tell, and while you'll have to register a new name there if you haven't already, it's really very stable.

And hey you can do different colours in the middle of text. :3

So yeah, make a bookmark or something, it's pretty useful and it has a LIIITTLE bit of lag, but at least it's somewhere to talk if Nexxushost goes down for a bit.

I like how 25 people have viewed but nobody replied. D: Hey Webs, too much to ask to get some sticky up in here? Just in case people need a chat to use in the meantime if tK goes kerplode?

Of course nobody's replied, it's a bloody infomercial thread. O _ o Look, see, read, get informed, nod, file information away and then close.

It's a good alternative but I have my doubts that Rycuda would appreciate being the "default & official" backup destination for the nexxus, especially without having been asked, and I would not be comfortable with doing that.

Something about 300 people you don't know descending into your chat all of a sudden, many of whom could be described accurately as rude, pushy little buggers, screaming about when the real system will be back up, is not a pleasant experience.

Especially given the fact that even a hundred simultaneous users would probably crash most systems or get them shut down, because there are times when our traffic patterns look less like normal usage and more like a really nasty DDoS attack.

See, I was gonna say the same as Web.
The Spire was once a secret little place, one that just a very select few people knew about..

No, it's a good suggestion, and thanks, Rusty. It's nice to know where to go in case something goes down here.

It's about the only place I know of these days. True though site limitations being what they are I doubt Ryc's server could handle the might of OVER NINETHOUSAAAAAND users. But something sorta had to be done to make sure there was something for people who really needed it.

I did let him know that tK went down at the time and that I directed people to Spire, and that if something exploded, that's my fault.

You'd be surprised with how some people react to it going down. e.e;

Rook, all sarcasm aside, how am I going to gloat over the size of my e-penis without a captive audience desperate to tell me that everything I believe is wrong except for the niche group of friends that I've carved a scarily homoerotic relationship with and the women who control with the possible hint of maybe showing me half a boob in the future except the Keep?

Or...High school.

And college.

And...Oh, dear. I found the trend.

I don't think phpMyChat is ideal software for a chatroom anyways (actually, no one should consider software that has had it's development haulted for over 2 years..).
In my opinion, code one from scratch or pick more secure, updated software. =)

Am doing.

Actually, phpMyChat got a few things right, albeit inadvertently. But development has been halted for much more than 2 years - I'd say it's been dead for close to seven years now. The only contributions released for it since have mostly made the system worse, not better.
