So, how many of you guys are giving Google's new web browser a try? So far I'm liking it, but I'm still looking for a homepage button that takes me back to the first page. So far the only way I can figure out to get back there is either opening a new tab or opening up the browser again.

I like that it spell checks for me as I write. ^__^

It's minimalist and practical, and you can opt out the Google privacy thingies.

But if the latter really concerns you, go for http://www.srware.net/en/software_srware_iron.php instead. Same framework, sans google branding.

I haven't had the opportunity to test it out, but I <3 my Firefox.
I look at it as a 3rd party browser, anyhow. It will go unused and become more junk on my computer.
Just sayin'.

I'm content with Firefox as well. I am still using version 2 mind you. But it's not because I am real crazy about which browsers are "best" browsers; I simply have the one that works for my needs.

I use Chrome for everything except the interweb PHP Chatz that I have the unfortunate morbid need to visit. It's less resourceful than Firefox, more slimline than IE and has that awesome ability to move tabs to other instances of Chrome or just make a new window from it.

I also like the Search URL Bar.

I'm not really likely to change because I don't have problems with Firefox. Inertia is a huge deal, and while there are a couple things that seem interesting in chrome (ie, the ability to pull tabs off into new windows) its not so big a deal that Im going to go to the trouble of switching.

I use Opera, which has the majority of features people usually cite as the reason the use Firefox/insert favourite browser here about two years before those browsers adopted the feature from Opera. : )


I also use IE6 and seamonkey, since I'm polybrowsermiphous.

I can't offer you any insight into Google Chrome, except that if you are into anything that may become illegal in the future in any given country, you may not wish to use it given it's sending (for permanent archiving) information about every website you visit. That is a liability for you since it only takes one subpoena for a court to get that information out of google and use it. This is particularly relevant information for Keep users, since, if you are, for instance, a furry - one day a government (possibly yours) is going to rule that it is a offense to view sexual pictures of a certain nature.

I'm curious, then, because I've been somewhat tempted to give Opera a try for a while (On the understanding that it's less bloated than Firefox).

How is it with personal security and all that jazz?

Pretty good. The response time to fixing discovered bugs is equal or better to Mozilla's response time, and they don't find as many with Opera.

It does take a bit of a leap to get used to Opera since it is pretty unique. The speed dial seems to be the feature most new users adore.

Wow web. I want to know, if possible... how can I browse Google's permanent archive? Is it possible to have the information destroyed on request, if it's something of your creation?

I know they put some of it up on the internet for their 10th anniversary (okay, I'm just going by memory there), but say - for example - that I have some, erm, incriminating evidence I need to get rid of, from their archives. Is destroying that evidence a possibility?

If they do outlaw it, will Google be forced to destroy the archives? I can't imagine a company like google being completely outlawed in the US.

Check the ToS; google will make that information available to third parties of its choice. Google gets to choose who has access. Although if you know someone that works at google, they do have a gigantic television/monitor somewhere where your search terms will show up as you make them.

AOL did this for sure - they put search histories of a couple million people or so up for public browsing. The person who did that called it a "gift to society." The reality was that a couple thousand people who had been stupid smart* enough to search for their names or credit card numbers online got their identities stolen and a few guys got fired.

Google has freely ignored most of the demands by EU to destroy personally identifiable information by either a) just not doing it or b) telling them they have done so but not actually destroying it. I doubt the US will ever ask them to destroy the information because someone, somewhere will recognize how valuable it is for "catching terrorists" or something.



* I say smart because up until the time this happened, it was considered a good idea to regularly search for your own name and personal details just to doublecheck that they weren't floating around in places they should not be. Many banks put out brochures advising their customers to do it - no one imagined that it would be an internet company that sold them out straight into the hands of criminals.

Being a minimalist, I love Google Chrome. :,3
However, I don't like that tK still doesn't self-refresh like it had in IE.

on that same note though, Google Chrome is still a baby browser; it's in beta yet, so.... it'll get "better"
