Well...seeing as I opened up a thread for Canon Characters interacting with originals and influenced characters in Role Play...

What's anyone who cares opinions on Dragonball/Z/GT characters in RP?

Obviously, some people have some penned up angst against others regarding this matter. So why not just let it all out right here.

The only opinion I have for now, in regards to opening this thread, is that the whole Saiya-Jin thing is WAY overdone and outplayed a gazillion times over. Not to mention that there are some people that think far to godly of a SSJ when interred into combat.

Jason...if you would be so kind as to further elaborate my generalizations please. XD

Dragonball characters are very cool.
Dragonball Z characters are not.
Dragonball GT characters do not exist.

DB: Agreed.
DBZ: Semi-Agreed, just cuz I love Majin Buu, "kid" form, and as well got a serious kick out of the Frieza saga
DBGT: Agreed, Never seen it and probably never will.

Dragonball Z was basically 'ok' up until the end of the Freiza saga, where, had Toriyama had his way (I *believe*) it would have ended. After that, it just went way, way, way downhill.

By the time it got to the Buu arc, it was thorougly unwatchable. So many plot-holes and problems with the insane-galaxy demolishing power levels that I just kinda stopped watching. Which was sad, as before that, I was a totally faithful 5 PM Toonami watcher. :V

Nice, a fellow Toonami watcher, Heh.

I am ashamed to say I have actually never even seen the Cell Saga.

I saw right up to the episode where everyone returned to earth, when Gohan pwned Vegeta.

That's it...

Yeah, saiya-jins are overdone. But you kind of have to expect that when the non-saiya-jins in DBZ, and to a lesser extent in DB, were useless cannon fodder. Let's take a quick look at what all humans accomplished in Z:

- Jack shit
- Nothing of consequence
- OH @#$% LOOK OUT KRILLIN GOT HIS SLEEPING POWERS AWOKEN BY THE FAT NAMEK G- oh wait he's still useless
- Nothing
- Nothing
- Oh, cool, Tien and Yamcha are getting training from King Kai. Too bad the only time it's ever worth anything is in anime filler, and for the rest of the series they're completely worthless except for two scenes for the rest of the series where Tien gets himself knocked out (Cell) and then killed (Buu.)

Even Piccolo really doesn't ultimately amount to a whole lot. He fuses with someone, gets stronger, blows his chance to defeat the bad guy rinse and repeat.

As far as GT, the only good thing to come out of them was Pan and that's because she was funny.

But all that having been said there are a few DBZ canons I wish I could see around. The one I'd be most interested in, and one of the ones least likely to be played for having little to no combat ability, is Bulma. The character would make a good plot device, quest hub, and all around good counterweight to the magic (it's fucking magic in most cases even when they don't admit it) in The Keep.

SMK already has a Pan_Chan running around so the one thing I found acceptable in GT I already have.

Oh, it should also be said that it's not as if saiya-jins are the most powerful thing around anymore anyway. Just about everyone I see anymore has some dumb transformation or character quirk that allows them to compete with the most powerful that the dragonball metaseries has to offer (which I myself am sadly guilty of much to my own chagrin.) More often than not they can easily actually exceed these powers anyway. And sometimes characters that are actually somewhat weaker are more intimidating anyway. Jason Baane would be far more terrified of a fully wanked out 40k adeptus astartes than he would be a Super Saiya-jin. They're two different types of enemies.

Weaker in power is the way 'd have to interpet this. But deftly more efficient in their own facilities.

It seems like with coming of great power tags along an incessant or deliberate "I Stwong so why be tactile" mentality. More often than not, it seems, that the closer someone comes to winning a bout, the first thing to happen is "Oops, I forgot to tell you about my ascension" (generally speaking of course) and then it all goes haywire. It's almost absurd to go from an enjoyable match to who can power up the most and the fastest, who's got the higher set of power tiers and who's going to feel like they need to take a hit, rather than logically approaching the situation.

That's in the realm of power fighting vs. Tech though, so yeah...

Anyway...

When I originally created my own character he was mostly weak and powerless. He got thrashed around by a few of the more powerful denizens of the Keep. Through RP and character development he got stronger and I eventually wound up taking him to SSJ after a couple of years worth of play. Through some other RP interactions he wound up being a slave of an immortal who owned his soul for a while where he had access to ways to increase his power. I've tried to keep his power gains limited to things I've actually RPed rather than just an arbitrary gain given by me.

I don't see what the point of even caring is.
If you don't like how they RP, flip them on the /ignore. It's the only place I use it and the best place to use it. You can't control the characters that OTHER people make, anyway. And if they're so irritating, make your own RP.

Aran's post reminds me of a beef I have with Saiya-Jin characters. Reading this, keep in mind that I do not necessarily doubt Aran; I just do find a few things about super saiya-jin irritating.

First of all, they all say they worked for it. Some may very well have but when they all have it, it makes me wonder. The only two saiya-jins I know of that do not have it (and I admit I only know of them because they RP in SMK from time to time) is a character named Fasha (who whines about it incessantly anyway) and Pan_Chan. I guess you can say Son_Gohan doesn't have it but that's because his character is MYSTIC.

And even in the case of those who did work for it: How? How did they work for it? In the show saiya-jins explode into power-puberty when they get reeeeeally emo. So is that it? Their characters just get pissed because their mom said they can't go to the local My Chemical Romance concert and then grow blond hair?

In the case of Cornon (one of the key regulars in SMK) Rosery actually triggered his ascension into the 'legendary' form. Her Morrigan character beat the hell out of Jason Baane, Cornon thought he was dead, turned up the Linkin Park volume to max and then ker-plowie turned into a full blown physical manifestation of the Nazi propaganda machine. It just seems really lame even when they do actually work for it, since clearly 'working' for it usually just means "my character didn't like something."

Ultimately I don't even see why the hell so many saiya-jin players see the need for the transformation anyway. Saiya-jins were already capable of some really crazy shit before SSJ rolled around, and nothing really changed about the way they fought on screen anyway. Yeah, they got faster and they got stronger apparently. But then it begs the question of just how much more powerful do you have to be when interacting with joe-average tavern hopper? Saiya-jins already have the giant monkey transformation that is quoted as multiplying their power by ten, and they have the whole ‘gets stronger when they survive a near-fatal experience’ thing that they stopped using in the series for some reason. It’s not like saiya-jins lack ways to expand their characters without super saiya-jin.

DBZ RPers get a lot of shit thrown at them and more often than not I do happen to stick up for them. Because, hey; they're hardly the worst things around anymore. Any given character from the Amarancy, for example, is going to be a million times worse with their 'magi' (don't worry, it's not magic! See, it doesn't have the 'c!') But they did set the trend and they do continue to power-whore incessantly and they continually demolish entire rooms in their fights. Son_Goku, for example, regularly announces the arena needs to clear out whenever he starts fighting because he's going to completely flatten it. Does no one have any respect for artifacts and structures of ancient significance anymore?!

DBZ RPers as a whole would be a lot more respectable if they as a whole did the following:

-   Less Saiya-jin characters; more of the plethora of other races in the DBZ universe.
-   Less arbitrary super saiya-jins.
-   Less wanton disregard for everyone else’s role-playing experience.

I imagine DBZ RPers would also be looked on with a more friendly light if they would actually go IC every once in a while. A lot of them do not and just lurk to spam OOC wherever Son_Goku happens to be at the time. Whoever that douche playing Trunks it, is a prime example of this.

Not to disregard the entirety of the post, but that right there is a prime component in which people should partake in.

Agreeing with Pink, halfway, I do have to say it is not up to us to RP for other people, we do what we do and f we dun like how others operate, well that's tough luck for us all.

No one forces anything towards anyone.

As far as the range of power goes...duncha think it a bit suspicious that with every tier of ascension achieved....there's yet another villain that much more powerful, ultimately trivialized by yet Another level of ascension?

Maybe it's just me, but it seems that there's always that One bad guy that can demolish fourteen superheros in a fell swoop...only to be beaten by some overused sentience of unawakened power.

Of course, I can't really state much without placing myself in the realm of hypocrisy, I stand guilty as charged on most accounts relating to the matter of that which Jason has stated, save for the fact that I've never attempted a Saiya-Jin on a Para RP scale.

>.>

I also destroyed the entire western portion of the Arena once...it made me sad -.-

What has always amused me about Dragonball is how INSANELY powerful 'magic' is in general.

Bobodi, Garlic Jr, and Bibidi (to a lesser extent, Debora) all used magic (or magical spit in the last case), and uh, well.

Bobodi and Bibodi used it to put together the universes' most obnoxiously powerful stupid pink blob thing that went on a rampage.

Debora had a no-saving-throw-allowed spit attack (wtf?) that instantly turned even the super powerful Picollo to stone (and Krillin, but nobody cares about him) too.

Then there's the whole creation-of-dragonballs and the Namekian power-awakening thing (Gohan and Krillin  got stronger yay). It's like magic can do basically anything in Dragonball, but it decides to focus more on people punching things. I've always found that amusing.

Also: Dragonball has werewolves and anthropomorphic tiger people. Whoa.

Dragonball isn't set in an actual real-world timeline. It's its own little unique universe/timeline.

Flying cars, fighter jets, an entire (Red Ribbon) military complete with bombs and guns, mummies, witches, native Americans, androids, spacecraft... it's basically a giant confused mess.

Well. They can build a time-compression device (Hyperbolic time chamber), and Bulma could build a Time Machine... so why in the blue hell didn't they just build a time machine and go back in time to kill Bibidi (before he could make Buu) or Dr. Gero (Before he made Cell and the gang)?

OR: While Oolong tried to wish for the Dragon to kill Vegeta and Nappa, and the dragon replied 'I cannot do that, as it is beyond my power" why not wish for their pods to explode? If a dragon can BRING PEOPLE BACK FROM THE DEAD a minor mechanical malfunction should be within its power. RIGHT!? >_<

I recall a Saiyan I played at one point, she certainly did not conform to the norm, she was orphaned on earth through a non-described accident of some sort. Beyond that she grew up with a small family isolated on a mountain, she was blind and she never gained any of the power the other Saiyans do, she couldn't fly, couldn't shoot energy blasts, couldn't blow up arenas that's for sure. She could 'see' in a limited fashion through a special kind of sight where people and things were outlined by there basic energy levels I guess I think I used Ki at the time, couldn't think of something better. The brighter people were the stronger they were...Wish I could recall her name...

Also in reference to the Arena Goku can try to flatten it all he wants the sentience that is TK will not allow him to do it, he could hurl it and entire stands of cheering fans into the sun and it would fly out the other side and land without so much as a ding on it, much like the pub, forest, west and east towers they cannot be damaged or hurt in anyway due to the sentience of TK, it just...instantly repairs the damage. Or so the myth goes...otherwise the Arena would've been gone long before Son_Goku started Rping in it.

That it does. As does the East tower,West Tower,Forest and Garden. If they didn't I'd be responsible for flattening the west tower twice and large sections of the forest just by moving through it. (A four ton eighteen foot tall, twenty five foot long Marilith does not make for a quiet walk through the forest.)

I chopped down the East tower with my great sword -.-

Painstaking effort, but it eventually fell.

Anyone else notice how similar the crash landings of Saiyans holds in comparison with superman >.>

In regards to Jason's questions, for my personal character it was more of a dire circumstance type thing. I can't recall all the details, but I believe he was under attack by one of Justy's old characters. Basically, it was the only thing to save his skin, even though he did wind up losing the overall battle.

As far as originality goes, you have to remember that this was my first character from when the Keep was young (being somewhere around 12, as was I). I know I wasn't the first saiyan, but I was one of the first few if I remember correctly.
