It is the 41st millenium. For more than a hundred centuries, the Emperor has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of Earth. He is the master of mankind by the will of the gods, and master of a million worlds by the might of his inexhaustible armies. He is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with power from the Dark Age of Technology. He is the Carrion Lord of the Imperium for whom a thousand souls are sacrificed every day, so that he may never truly die.
Yet even in his deathless state, the Emperor continues his eternal vigilance. Mighty battlefleets cross the daemon-infested miasma of the warp, the only route between distant stars, their way lit by the Astronomican, the psychic manifestation of the Emperor's will. Vast armies give battle in his name on uncounted worlds. Greatest amongst His soldiers are the Adeptus Astartes, the Space Marines, bio-engineered super-warriors. Their comrades in arms are legion: the Imperial Guard and countless planetary defense forces, the ever-vigilant Inquisition and the tech-priests of the Adeptus Mechanicus to name only a few. But for all their multitudes, they are barely enough to hold off the ever-present threat from aliens, heretics, mutants – and worse.
To be a man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruelest and most bloody regime imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be re-learned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim dark future there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods. =][= Chaos claims the unwary or the incomplete. A true man may flinch away it's embrace, if he is stalwart, and girds his soul with the armour of contempt. -Gideon Ravenor, the Spheres of Longing =][= The Inquisitor Unthrinn sits before you, hands drumming over the reports on his desk. He watches Atellus and Hack intently, Thrall standing beside him, head down. “A mess. A disgraceful, disgusting mess. A full scale revolt. Two deaths. The loss of any Imperial face on Joqur-Ni, the destruction of a major forge and a powerful asset. You even allowed the findings to be corrupted.” He keeps his voice level, but it's difficult. He stares at Atellus, specifically.
“Go. I don't even want to sit here with you any longer. I am ashamed that my trust was so misplaced in you. I expect better from my acolytes. I expect much better!” He slams his fist down on the desk. Even Thrall manages to cringe. “You have rooms provided in one of Scintilla's better hotels. You don't deserve it. In about a week's time, you'll be delivering this message and a few assorted packages to a friend of mine. Surely, even a task as simple as this, you can manage. You will travel to Solomon with three others. Do not. Fail. Me. Again.”=][= Note: This is a CHAT-BASED GAME! This game will start at an unspecified date at the moment, that isn't Wednesday or Friday. It'll run from 6pm-Midnight EST. Atella (Rumors) and Hack (Daeva) have a guaranteed position (And gain 3 months income + 250 thrones). There are three open slots. 1. Chirurgeon Atella Lucillius – Noble Adept (Rumors) 2. Renegade Hazel “Hack” Karna - Void-Born Scum (Daeva) 3. Investigator Mordechai Wollsey - Hive World Arbitrator (Ketch) 4. Sergeant Lekk Ronsk - Feral World Guardswoman (Sini*) 5. Reserved for Gui You can contact me on the chat as Inquisitor or Sideus, by email at sideus@gmail.com , or: AIM: Zorrn the Great MSN: zorrn_the_great@hotmail.com All characters start at 2500 EXP with 1000 Thrones + 1 months income.

XP: 50 Spent: 2450 Dust lay thick on the floor and shelves. A long hallway lit by oil lamps led to a dark staircase, descending deep below the well travelled corridors of the ancient library. A woman, dressed in fine, though simple, robes crept carefully along a row of featureless pillars, time-worn and unimpressive. She stopped at one and, glancing around to be sure she was alone, placed her back against it. Taking four careful steps away from it toward the opposite wall, she stopped again and peered at the floor. She began tapping the stones under her feet until she found the one she was looking for. She pulled from inside her robes a sturdy sort of key and, placing it in what appeared to be a natural crack along the length of the stone, she turned it and pull up. The stone lifted almost imperceptibly and a hidden passage was revealed on the far, unlit wall. Making her way down another set of stairs, bearing with her a torch from a sconce just inside the secret doorway, she came at last to a dank room that had been, until now, unspoiled and unseen for centuries. She gazed around in awe at the archaic, heavily bound tomes on the shelves. Pulling one from its place on the wall, she set it down on a table in the middle of the room. The cover of the book was marked with an odd symbol, not wholly unlike the familiar symbol of the Holy Inquisition, but bearing an addition: a small dancing flame, turning the well known glyph into something almost akin to a candle. She ran her fingers over the symbol and felt a barely noticeable heat. Just as she was about to open the book she was startled by a voice behind her. “Such things are not for the eyes of mere academics and scribes.” She spun around and found herself face to face with a figure of impressive stature. “The consequences of uncovering such knowledge are dire, indeed…But you already know this, don’t you?” Her heart was pounding in her chest. This was exactly what she had spent weeks, months dreading, why she had taken so long to decide to act on the information she’d uncovered. “Still, the book remains closed. Though you’ve seen far more than you ought to have, you are still blessedly ignorant of what it means. And the fact that you were even able to find your way here is an impressive matter on its own.” He walked over to the table and eyed the book warily. “Such talents may be put to use in a more…guarded capacity.” He turned back to the woman and, taking the torch from her hand, indicated to doorway out. She quickly made her though the arch of the doorway as the man glanced at the shelves around him, before settling on the book on the table once again. A moment later she was once again standing in the hallway above, waiting, as he finally emerged, the crackling sound of flames consuming wood and paper unmistakable behind his heavy footfalls. =][= Atella Lucilius is a learned scholar—with a special interest in the Inquisition—and of noble lineage. While she finds the ebb and flow of noble life to be a second nature, she would much prefer to be left to her research. Her Administratum robes certainly aren’t dirtied by any of the grimy streets of the Imperium. Mingling with the lower classes was never of any interest to her. Like her mother, her unquenchable thirst for knowledge and forbidden lore draws her far beyond the academic boundaries declared to be 'safe'. Like her father, her keen interest in the darkest secrets and methods of the Inquisitors themselves has brought her to what could be a dangerous position: an Inquisitor’s acolyte. Although not remotely suspicious of why they would want her (Atella’s knowledge of the Inquisition could prove to be a large thorn in their sides, and her ability to answer questions would be a valuable skill), she cannot help but be curious as to where she will be called, or what she will be called to do.

I'm sorry that the forum game didn't pan out like we had hoped - I only just got back from my honeymoon and was bummed to see it wrapped up, but I understand. Unfortunately I rarely get off work before 7:30 EST, and so by the time I get home, eat, and hug MY WIFE, it's just not realistic for me to try and join in on this.
Maybe I can drop in and watch you sometime, when you get days hammered out.
Sorry bud.

It's alright man. The game ended for a number of reasons and I just decided I'd end it before it went the way of the Dodo, with no one posting at all. At least there's some closure this way. I'm sorry you won't be able to make it to play. Glad to hear she didn't murder you on the honeymoon.

One thing I'll say for labour; & that is, that it isn't as offensive as the corresponding mutatory force which now threatens culture in America. I refer to the force of business as a dominating motive in life, & a persistent absorber of the strongest creative energies of the American people. -Lovecraft

Hack shares her real name with no one but those she trusts, and she doesn’t trust many. Years in a decrepit hulk in space have turned her into a suspicious, trigger happy, and tenacious woman who fears very little, and settles most everything on the end of a gun. But years in the warp, sharing a ship filled with who knows what lurking in the darkness, and heretics turning away from the God-Emperor, so far from those damned to the Warp, have given her an eye for such individuals, and her brutish, ruthless tactics get her what she wants. For the most part. The years with the heretics and Warp tainted have also turned her into a near zealot of her faith. Raised by one of the few priests on board, her loyalty to her Emperor should never be questioned. The tainted are judged quickly, and executed by being launched into space, or a shot to the head. Her time spent with the Inquisition have softened her somewhat to people, and she’d become a bit more agreeable after having been part of cell, albeit a somewhat failed one. Still, that bad mark on her record has given her a drive to do it right this time around.
--- DESCRIPTION: Hack is a petite woman, but there is obvious strength in her small frame. Her skin has never been touched by the sun, and her eyes, made pink by a birth defect, are always hidden behind a pair of tinted glasses, to protect them from sunlight. Her features are sharp and angular, her lips full, and her eyes large. Her gaze is intense, almost unblinking at times, as if she’s looking through you. Her hair is usually longer, done up in a mess of braids, wraps, and dreads, pinned up with scrap pieces of metal from her ship, a reminder of home. Her ghostly appearance makes her forever appear clean, and any bits of color against her skin stand out starkly. Already having previously served the Inquisitor, she has made a point of preparing herself for what might lay ahead. She doesn’t own more than she can carry comfortably on her person, adopting military fatigues for basic clothing, and hand-me-down Guard Flak Armor for protection. Her trusty shotgun is always on her back, her pistol at her hip, and her sword strapped to her waist, ready for action. Being ready is her strong point. The time in normal society has also changed her from a trigger happy, aggressive, standoffish woman to a more social, trigger-happy, aggressive woman.

The buzzing of flies was faintly audible over the hum of cheap electric lights, which barely kept the dank, stuffy room lit. A run down looking man took a quick sip from a small flask before replacing the cap and stuffing it in a coat pocket. He leaned in over a grimy table.
“So I was told that you could offer me a guarantee. I want to make sure I get what I’m paying for.”
Across the table, eyes buried in shadow, a heavily tattooed man sat erect, a dry, thin sneer drawn across his face.
“Of course. You name the terms and I shall carry out the deed to the letter. I assume it is safe to say that you are aware of my reputation. I’ve never received complaint, nor heard report of dissatisfaction among my clients.” He tilted his head back and crossed his arms in front of his chest.
“Good, good…” the first man replied, nodding slightly. “I want to know that it wasn’t quick. I want to make sure he knows it was from me.”
“For a marginal extra fee, I can even make sure you see it happen in person,” added the tattooed man. “Any arrangement you like, provided you can pay.” At this, the sneer vanished. “And I’m afraid I must insist on cash, half in advance, the remainder upon successful completion of the contract. Do you have the cash with you?”
The disheveled man dug into his coat pockets, searching each one in turn, before coming out with a wrinkled, stuffed brown envelope.
“Now, I just want to get this straight. You’ve killed men before?”
“Countless.”
“And when I give you this money, you plan on killing Deacon Kraig, as per my request?
“Absolutely.”
“And you do this all in the name of the cult of, uh…what did you call it?”
“The Ring of Thorns.” He leaned forward, revealing a tattoo on his forehead of a small ring, around which was wound a vine with eight, long thorns, evenly spaced, producing a symbol eerily similar to the star of chaos.
“Wow,” the worn down man sighed. He paused for a moment, staring, before coming back, his voice changed from that of a desperate client to a tired official. “You boys get all that?”
The tattooed man furrowed his brow in confusion for a moment before speaking. “I-I’m not sure—” He was cut off before he could finish, however, by a quick blurt of static and then a voice from inside the other man’s coat.
“Copy, at your mark, Investigator.”
Mordechai Wollsey stood, reaching his hand back into his coat and pulling his flask out once again. “Take him,” he said, turning away from the man as the two doors on either side of the room burst in and several Arbitrators filed in, shock mauls in hand. There was a very brief struggle as the tattooed man quickly drew a sword, but the heavy mauls made short work of him.
A young man in uniform approached the Investigator and spoke over the dull sound of steel clubs hitting flesh.
“This arrived for you while you were here, sir.” He handed Mordechai a note, bearing the seal of the Inquisition. Mordechai stared at it for a moment before shoving it in his pocket and walking out the door, taking one more sip from the flask.

--
Lekk was born as a member of one of the nomadic desert clans on the planet Devin. She wasn’t anything special, as far as her people went—you were either tough and capable, or you were dead. She was one of her clan’s better warriors, though admittedly not best. But she was good enough to be chosen among those who left when an Imperial Guard ship settled on the planet; as an inhospitable feral world, the only product that Davin contributed in its tithe to the Imperium was its people. Given time and training, Lekk moved through the ranks and honed herself into a sort of feral warrior. Her sort of skilled savagery brought her to the attention of someone who could use the muscle, and as surprised as she is to be working for an Inquisitor, she’s set to give her swords’ keenness in duty.

As of right now, the first game will be September 11th. Be ready for bad jokes about a terrible event in American history.

This week the group completed Part 1: The Master of Chamber XIII where the group made planetfall on the dying Hive World of Solomon, nearly two years after departing from Scintilla, with the former Colonel-Commissar Viktor Sieg in tow. After landing they were suddenly informed that plans had changed - a trip to the Halls of the Chancellery Court, a 1-kilometer wide building dedicated to the Administratum, they were transferred into the service of the decrepit Inquisitor Silas Marr. They have been tasked with the covert mission of investigating the auctioning of goods from the Haarlock's estate, an infamous group of Rogue Traders who played a hand in the founding of the Calixis Sector. An oddity leading to another oddity, sure.
Next week, on September 18th, 2009 the acolytes will be setting out on Part 2: A Voyage Over a Poisoned Sea

As the acolytes move over the poisonous Balemire Sea, they have a chance to interact with the others who have been cordially invited to the House of Dust and Ash. The Investigator Mordechai sat down and spoke with Lanus Cisten, a minor noble and scion of a local house, as well as a Scholar, and his adjutant, Wheln. The women on the other hand encountered Octavia Nile and her train, who offered and said nothing of herself before making an attempt to poison the group's food - however, none of them noticed, and known none the wiser. A strange woman indeed. The barkeep is one Nahun Grist and, despite a bribe, knows nothing about the other strange visitors who share your transport.
You are merely a day and some-odd hours from your fateful destination.
