Okay, my first attempt at a digital piece. An attempt to get a grasp on how this all works. it's 2.5 x 3.5, which is my typical mockup/thumbnail size, and resolution for the web. Now, if only I could do better.

As I do it, I'll get more done I am sure. For now though, I think my first lesson learned is go big or go home. This small stuff at low dpi means lack of detail. Sigh. But I am sure I shall improve, though this one took me far too long for a thumbnail.

Figured i'd add this work in progress. Note that the original is being done at 11x 17 and 300dpi, so it's been modified and flattened, but you get the gist. Very early stages.

Wooow! Much bigger improvement!
I can already tell you have an idea as to what it is you're doing, also I admire that you work in neutral tones. I work in such bright ones!
By the way, have you clearly defined your lightsource(s) for these?

Thew light source for Phoenix will be the flames of the Phoenix that will eventually be detailed behind the character, thus backlighting / from above. As to the first try, the light source I imagined was to the left, a little near and up. As for Phoenix, this is VERY early stage, and the purpose of the neutrals at this point is to simply give me an idea of what is where and a sense of belonging. the character involved will likely change dramatically, though he will be armored/dressed in cool colors. The Phoenix's tail coming behind him from an eruption will serve more or less as an arrow pointing towards the cooler colored character, and my idea is that they eye will naturally be drawl from top down. The brighter, fiery Phoenix will dominate the page, and will draw the eye first when completed(or so I hope), down to a detailed figure looking down or remorseful. Not sure yet how it'll turn out as it's only my second attempt at this. But that little sketch overlay I have going on will likely disappear quickly. Guidelines, guidelines.
