New Thread For Arena Modship - Commentary Welcome

Hi, I'm Mikail/Irrationalist/Arcadion, and I'm an admin. I'll be handling the Arena thread and such for the time being.

I promoted Pitch to a trial period in the Arena, and I'm considering another spot. If you're seriously interested, leave me a forum PM and I'll rifle through it when it's appropriate. I may not reply immediately or at all; please don't take it personally, but I'm terribly absentminded sometimes in correspondance.

I know not everyone agrees with this move, and that's part of why this thread exists; I'm going to be checking it to know what your concerns are, if things are or are not working as we hope, all the things like that. I'd rather do something, even it's the wrong thing, than do nothing, and things can always go back if need be.

That said, I hope things go as smoothly as I'm hoping, and I'll be listening (reading?) to your feedback.

I've been back for less than a week after a year's sabbatical. So far, the Mainhall is actually better than it had been before I left. It's still no where near what it once was, but the players who made it the focal point of the nexxus are gone as well, so the Golden years remain Golden.

Now the Arena, on the other hand... I walked in there the other night just to see what people's fighting styles had evolved to, whether para's were still the rage, and gods who don't have a clue how to use their powers still bullied folks with verbose descriptions of how they wipe their arse.

Instead, I found a group of people all ooc, bashing a character in another room for her profile. Now, in this groups defense, they were bashing the woman's profile because she specifically stated she was looking for an incest Rp. People are tapped, especially in the Keep...but we know this. At least the girl was trying to actually Rp. These people in the Arena were doing nothing of sort. And worse, they were being encouraged by the trial moderator of the room. Don't ask me her name..Pithetch or something equally forgettable. The point is, if these are the folks that are even being considered for modship of a public room, then the Keep's standards have fallen beyond redemption.

Ooc in rooms has always been an issue. It's up to the players in the room to moderate themselves. That may not be possible, given the overall culture that's been corrupted throughout the years... but if its been allowed to get this bad, then it might slowly become as good as it once was. That's up to more people than those who read this forum to decide.

Discussion helps. It's a step in the right direction. Know what will really fix the Keep though? Go out and Play. I'll hope to see you folks around.

I was there, and she wasn't encouraging anything. She tried to stop it. I don't appreciate the lies -- and I'm the #1 person AGAINST an Arena Mod.

Edit: And if I recall correctly, you weren't above the OOC yourself, Ruindil. You adopted one of those condescending "Okay now children" attitudes, and then dipped off to whine country.

I actually made a return to roleplay a couple nights ago and had a few whisper conversations with players wondering who I was, that involved what a hellhole the Arena had become. Which tells me that someone is NOT doing their job, if people are still complaining about it.

Now, that being said, I only have other people's views on it and not my own. Point being, after hearing about how horrible it is in there, why would I want to go find out?

The Arena has unofficially and through the 'silent' majority - 'silent' because it wasn't a quiet one - decided to fashion itself into an IC/OOC room. It's not really difficult at all to find RP there - or at least, no more difficult than it is to find RP in any other room if you plan to just go in and say "Hey, I feel like RPing. Anyone else?"

Chances are, if you go in there knowing jackshit about anyone that hangs out there, chances are, you'll get a bunch of responses ranging from "No." to "Who the fuck are you?" and the "FINALLY SOMEONE TO FITE ME" from Wolfprince.

tl;dr: Things change, etc etc. Arena's not a hellhole, people like exaggerating, writing a forum post here takes more effort than clicking the 'Arena' room in the stupid chat, etc etc.

So, basically, nothing's changed, which contradicts your statement. The Arena has ALWAYS been a sore spot in regards to people bringing in OOC into that room in particular and has ALWAYS required moderation in the strictest sense. The Arena though, in regards to the rules is supposed to be strictly IC. More importantly, though, there's already two separate rooms for OOC shenanigans. The Arena shouldn't be another exception.

Lastly, I should formulate my own opinion on it, but to be honest, when out of 5 or 6 conversations I had specifically point out the fact that I shouldn't go to the Arena, again, such a ringing endorsement certainly encourages me to eagerly go hop in, amirite?

Not true, actually. A couple years back - by 'couple' I mean 4+ or so - the Arena was mainly people lurking and RPing, with more or less a minimum of chatter. Except in the cases of people complaining about unfair fights, raging about certain RPers, etc, etc. It might have always been a sore spot, it might have 'always required moderation in the strictest sense', but I use 'might' for a reason here.

Most people in the room - as of now - are quite tolerant of OOC, even OOC during RP.
And similarly, most people in the room are, I believe, more or less pleased with current moderation. 'Current moderation' being Pitcheh in this case - since the Arena has not had its own specific mod for the five years I've been on tK, up until recently. Relatively speaking, that is.

In regards to the rules, people've brought up that it should be strictly IC plenty of times before. There was plenty of talk about that months ago while the idea of an Arena-only mod was brought up, but that issue's been settled for a long, long while.
And as I mentioned, it's evolved due to the people that frequent it - either you like it, deal with it, or leave.

Who said anything about you being encouraged to 'eagerly go hop in'? As if entering a room and sitting in - even afk - for a grand total of fifteen minutes will somehow give your computer, and by extension you, every form of STD known to man.

I think things have changed, but y'know what? Maybe you'll actually have to take your mouse, click the name, and bear with the terrible agony of having to read more text, and formulate a decision on your own. It's horrible for me to ask you to do such a thing, but I promise, it won't actually kill you.

in all seriousness though, we already have TWO OOC default rooms, I don' t think we need another one with even a whiff of 'ooc' about it, but I don't ever go in the Arena anymore, so eh whatever.

Something does need to happen about smogging up arpee with ooc nonsense. That is just down right infuriating when you are trying to host some sort of down to the essence battle and you have to keep scrolling up to read through the other's post. Some protest one should simply copy and paste to a word processor, But why should I, One whom has as much entitlement to the site screen as anyone else have to avert text for the convenience of crap that should not even be taking place in the first place, out of character nonsense that can easily be taken to whispers if it is that god damned important to type at some one.
