Welcome to Camelot

Landlocked in a harsh and unforgiving terrain the kingdom thrives thanks to the hard work and dedication of her citizens. The Legendary Knights of Pendragon protect these lands from the constant threat of invasion, barbarian raids, and druidic magic. Castle Camelot sits as an impenetrable sanctuary in a sea of darkness and fear, her people safe inside those walls and beneath this banner. Alas all is not well in Camelot, a poison has been spreading through the peasant population, seething beneath King Uther’s tyrannical dedication to tradition and hatred of magic. The threat of rebellion is becoming a very real possibility and Camelot’s many envious enemies simply wait for a sign of weakness to strike. There may be dark days in the kingdom’s future, dark days indeed…

OOC
There have been many variations on the legend of King Arthur Pendragon and the knights of Camelot throughout the ages, this will be our take. Historical accuracy, or lack thereof, aside this is a fictional free form setting, meaning character driven plots will motivate the direction of Camelot and her people.

This is a para/multi-para role play with a two paragraph audition post required for acceptance. This is a one time requirement, but players should be able to consistently produce one paragraph posts during regular play.

Being that this is Camelot it is a dark ages mundane fantasy setting. What I mean by adding that ‘mundane’ in there is that people are mortal no matter how skilled they are, there are no Gods here. But more on this in the character section.

Magic will be limited, outlines and restrictions will be detailed in the character section, but keep the above point in mind. There are no fireballs from your eyes or lightning from your arse.

Light OOC in the RP room is tolerated but extended conversations should be taken to whispers or another appropriate room. Site rules apply in regards to adult oriented scenes, private rooms are available for the purpose. OOC Drama of any kind will be quashed or removed to better promote a fun and friendly experience for all the players.

Mods will run scenes from time to time, please respect that persons decisions in regards to combat and posting order. Dice rolls and coin flips WILL be asked for from time to time to represent the unpredictability of such situations.

Discrimination in any ooc form will not be tolerated. That being said this is a dark ages role play meaning there are social expectations upon women and peasants. Noblemen and the Monarchy wields unquestionable power and the King’s word is law. To play a warrior women of peasant birth will require a good backstory for approval.

Setting

Camelot is on the verge of turmoil forged in a world of harsh extremes. The climate is tempestuous and the frontier savage. Land locked in the center of a sprawling temperate forest the kingdom relies on the many traders that travel her patrolled roads to bring goods from the coast. What can’t be found in the markets can likely be claimed from the land with the knowledge or skill to do so. Camelot has undoubtedly thrived in recent years, despite several skirmishes with bordering neighbours and a rise in barbarian activity. But it hasn’t come without a heavy cost.

Just over twenty years ago King Uther decreed the use of magic to be a crime punishable by, and only by, death. The times following this decree were filled with uncertainty and fear as many innocents found their way to the pyre. Sorcerers both benevolent and destructive were rooted out and put to the sword, those that survived did so by fleeing or falling so far into the shadows no light can find them. As the smoke began to clear Camelot emerged stronger than ever, even if that strength is founded in fear and tyranny, where the mere accusation of magic is often enough to send a neighbour to the executioner‘s block.

But in recent nights troubling news finds its way to the Royal Court, spurred by talk of unrest many jealous neighbours have increased activity along the borders. A strange sickness has started to infect the lower city and with the physicians and herbalists unable to find a cure the peasants grow restless, blaming Uther and his blood thirst for this cursed plague. And to top if off several ranchers have reported lost livestock to a Basilisk that has born a clutch somewhere nearby. If Camelot is to see another season she will need her heroes.

Rules for Magic

Magic has been outlawed in Camelot for twenty years. Possessing magic or an item of magical quality will put your character in danger. Magic is becoming a thing of fable and legend, magical creatures are being hunted to extinction and the Old Religion is dying out.

To play a magic character requires you to have gotten your training outside of Camelot. Most likely from the druidic celts or in rare cases from a rogue sorcerer.

Owning a magical weapon or item requires extreme use of caution. Should somebody discover the magical qualities and report it imprisonment and execution are nearly assured.

Magic is volatile and dangerous and at the same time benign and sacred. It can be used to heal as easily as wreak havoc, but it is a dying art. Long gone are the days of fire balls and lightning bolts, most magic now comes in the forms of potions, curses, and cantrips.

Rules for Knighthood and Nobility

Being a Knight requires a lifetime of training and dedication, a moral code and honourable ethics. Failure to adhere to the Knight’s Code can mean dishonor and banishment, at worst the King may strip a noble of his titles and destine his lineage to poverty. Being banished from court is not a death sentence, what the King takes away the King can also give back. Banished Knights and Nobles are frequently permitted back into court should they provide useful or otherwise convince the King either through bribery or the word of influential friends.

Not all Nobles are Knights. Some nobles prefer to take up roles as advisors, set up in small Baronies and Townships in the countryside. They frequent the King’s Court to bring him news of the frontier lands, to marry off their daughters, or to simply enjoy in the feasts his majesty hosts.

Rules for Peasantry

The common people make up 90% of Camelot’s population, from servants in the kitchen to smithies in low town. Many flock to the cities safety and high walls, rather dealing with an oppressive monarch than the wilds. The Druidic Celts are not all magicians, in fact the majority of them are as mundane as most but simply believe in the Old Religion. Playing a Peasant can make you an attendant or page, most Squires are of noble birth and training to become knights themselves.
