For me, it was a book I read in middle school titled Eaters of the Dead. The book was renamed in order to match the title of a movie based on it. Maybe you've seen the movie:

Going off of memory, some diplomat from Iraq is sent (see: politically exiled for dicking the Caliph's girl) North to document... something. I forget. Ibn Fadlan ends up camping with a bunch of Rus Vikings. Coincidentally, the vikings are called even further North to defend Hrothgar's King from some terrible evil. Mirroring the months in their lunar callendar, 13 warriors are chosen to go aid Hrothgar, but since the 13th month in the lunar callendar is irregular (shorter than the rest), the thirteenth warrior they choose is a mysterious foreigner-- Ibn Fadlan himself. So, yeah. Movie was cool, but the book was better.

Honestly?  (not a movie that inspired me, but oh well)

I think the book(s) that inspired me most were R.A. Salvatore's Cleric Quintet and Anne Bishop's Black Jewels series. o_o;

So many. I'm more all about the sci-fi, so it's been Space Opera for me.

Sunshine, The Fifth Element, Event Horizon, Predator, Pandorum, Star Trek, Star Wars... etc etc. I won't even get into the books. I'm definitely heavily influenced by Charles Stross and William Gibson.

Most of all:

The perfect movie, IMO.

The only movie I can think of is the old school, original Ong Bak from '03, since I was primarily a fighting RP'er in the beginning.

If anything, though, I've been mostly influenced by video games.

Specifically, Devil May Cry 3, which I logged like 300+ hours on the normal and special editions (with Vergil) and still got the disks all over my house.

I'm a huge film enthuasiast (as any TKer who's picked my brain about film theory will tell you), but ironically, much like Auvic and Kade, my earliest RP influence was literary, and not Audio/Visual.

The book was The Blooding by Patricia Windsor. I discovered it in middle school, right about the same time I began RPing. Needless to say, its intriguing use of werewolf-lore came to inspire my RP dramatically.

As far as 'media' influences go, I'd be remiss if I didn't cite:

Knight Rider
The Star Wars saga
Star Trek (yes, all of it)
CSI
Buffy/Angel
Farscape
Doctor Who
The First Two Alien Movies
The First Two Terminator Movies
Bladerunner
2001: A Space Odyssey/2010
Luc Besson Films (Nikita, 5th Element, etc.)
Blade ....
Gone in Sixty Seconds (The Original, and the Remake)

Yeah, and it quickly becomes a long, long list. I'll just stop here.  Lips sealed

RP is a hobby; it is nothing more and nothing less. It is comparable to scrapbooking, model-railroad, gardening, etc. It is a self-indulgent, nigh narcissistic practice that yields no tangible benefits to anyone in any real, practical applications, and serves little more than to justify the egos of those involved, and occasionally impress someone who is equally self-indulgent and narcissistic. Taking it too seriously is a waste of time.

Not so much movies, or books really.

But comics. X-men, Avengers, Justice League. All of that jazz.

Most movies are inspired off books anyway. The big thing for me is Tolkien's works (and I'm eagerly waiting for The Hobbit to come out!).

There are certain anime that inspire me as well, and games. Such as Record of Lodoss War, Ronin Warriors (anybody remember them way back on Toonami with Sailor Moon and DBZ?), Hellsing, and the Final Fantasy series.

Hmmm, my largest influences?
Sandman
Hellblazer
Doctor Who
Venture Brothers
Hellboy
Hitchhiker's guide
Transmetro
My favorite types of roleplay environment are generally Modern Fantasy or Sci fi. I like an element of exploration and awe experienced in RP. Large Cyberpunk elements exist as well.

Anything by J. R. R. Tolkien would be, by far, the biggest inspiration.

Everything by director Hayao Miyazaki.

Disney movies inspire me, but it's more on an sketching and storyboard level than character creation.

'The Count of Monte Cristo', 'Hook', 'Fergnully: The Last Rainforest', 'MirrorMask', 'Equilibrium', 'What Dreams May Come', 'White Oleander'.

I'mma nerd out like shit and straight up admit that most of the stuff that really inspires me is old RPG supplements. D&D, Shadowrun, that kind of thing.

Let me give an example, here:

Not a movie so much as a series (manga, movie, TV show etc.):

And then innumerable kung-fu/crime drama movies, including Enter the Dragon.

Despite my love for fantasy literature and film, I don't do much with it.

Back then, the usual fares; Star Wars, Star Trek. But alongside that were movies like Sneakers, The Game, Some-movie-I-can't-name-where-small-robot-choppers-were-fucking-shit-up.

That was fun. But most of my inspiration came from books rather than movies. Though, as of late, Limitless has provided me with some brainjuice. It's a bit of a protoA.I. concept, I would say. Your brain doing stuff, amazing stuff, without your conscious input.

Heh.  Kade beat me to it.  I haven't had the pleasure of reading the book yet, but the movie The 13th Warrior inspired the creation of my first few characters.  I have since expanded to other things, but main characters still always seem to have a hint of viking about them in one way or another.

Christ, um.
jesus.

Don't think it really counts as Genius in my case, but here goes

Aliens, Alien, Ghost in the Shell, Dominion, Akira, Blade Runner, Tank Girl, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away... to name but a few.

There's a couple tv series in there too and a lot of videogames, but this is for movies, so...
