Author Topic: GOOD THINGS [A thread for information and positive change we can all enact]  (Read 756 times)

I wanted to start a thread here to enact some positive change.

Now, I wholy expect some flaming and all before this gets underway, because frankly, people get angry or try to put down efforts to do some good. Why? It's fun, it's easy. But please try to keep the immaturity to a minimum. Considering the purpose of this thread, it'll really look bad on you if you do the usual here. So, if you don't have anything helpful to say, please don't post at all.

Also, I don't care that this is on a "roleplaying forum", I trust that there are enough decent people here to look past that fact and not use it as an excuse to not contribute or do something good.

Anyhow, the MEAT of this is that I strongly believe in activism and the potential for positive change. Therefore, I would like to use this as a space where we can all get together and share things that can be used or taken up by other users for the purpose of doing some good around the world. Seeing that this is a place that brings together people from around the world, it's a good chance to network, chat and generally blab about what's going on and the possibilities of doing something about it.

The guidelines for what can be posted are listed here :

Information
articles
stories (first-hand accounts are best and more useful)
blog posts
papers---both academic and casual
wiki entries
news bulletins
(please use a source, or simply give us the link to help track/confirm the validity of the topic)

Free things
Links/coupons for free schwag or events here! Most Keepsters aren't rich, so you may be helping someone in need!

Volunteer Work/Networking/places to help and donate[/b]
Shit keeps happening in the world. Many of us would like to help, so please also bring up links/articles/information about how people can get plugged in or get involved. Red Cross text campaigns of donating through cell phones are excellent examples

Well, that's all I've got to say for now! Good luck everyone, let's hope this takes off!

SAVE THE EARTH

No really, hate this whole pollution thing? Too broke to do anything about it?
Yeah, me too.

Lowe's is giving away free trees for Earth Day, this Saturday, 4/23/11. Afraid you might kill it?
Me too.
Regardless, it's a small step that shouldn't be too hard to take!

Most I can contribute for now; issue wise:

If any of you are about Reproductive Rights and live in a city with an abortion clinic, check this site out. This is Louisville's Abortion Clinic escort site. On the right there are links to national organizations for reproductive justice and escorting organizations; specifically Planned Parenthood, NOW and Wench to name a few.

http://everysaturdaymorning.wordpress.com/

I can guarantee that the clinic in most of your cities (should you be American or Canadian, perhaps even otherwise) needs volunteers. Especially on Saturdays! If you can hack it, contact them and show up. Your presence would be a boon. <3

CASA - Court Appointed Special Advocate for children.

It's something dear to me when I heard my cousin was beaten by his stepfather two years back. I adore kids and it's heartbreaking to see them abused and mistreated. I plan to volunteer when I have the appropriate time and resources.

Here's a site I've found pretty handy.

http://www.retailmenot.com/

I've used the coupon vouchers there for dominos.com.au ordering online pizza, and I've been able to get some really cheap deliveries which is great for when I'm broke.

I'm not sure what else it's good for, but apparently there are lots of store coupons listed there for a variety of things so you guys might find something there that's helpful to you, no matter where you live.

I saved a bunch of money on car insurance by switching to Geico! <--Mandatory.

No, but really.

http://www.wish.org/

Make-a-wish Foundation. Bet none of you have ever seen this site. As someone who has witnessed first hand what these guys can do I feel obligated to put their name out there for the people to see. If I get the links to other pages like these or semi-related I'll post 'em. New comp, none of the old bookmarks.

[ Edit: Geico was actually more expensive than the one we have now Sad ]

I have a vested interest in this as my niece, who is now a happy three year old, was born with many physical complications. She has spina bifida occulta, hemivertebrae scoliosis, and a club leg that is two and a half inches shorter then the other. She has been a Shriner's baby from the get and they are wonderful. So check them out if there is one near you.

I do the same. But I save the caps and donate them.
Every 1000 caps, a kid gets dialysis.

We're all better than you, 1337.

Except for pies. I blame Rook and Ix for that.
