Hey there.

I'd just like to reopen the mic to an issue that has been jabbing at me for a bit now. I know it comes up every once in a while, but I think the topic deserves its own thread. I've spoken to people on-site who say they would like this and some off-site who say they will not role-play in TK because of this issue.

Is it at all possible that the background color can be changed? A simple 50% gray would more than suffice, I feel. The white can get a little painful on the eyes after a while. Just speaking for myself, here, I can only RP when I get off of work and by then I'm usually just a little fatigued, and the bright background of TK can make my eyes sore after about an hour.

This has been talked about before here and there but nothing has ever really come of it. One of the biggest concerns was that changing the background color would mean that some colors don't show up as well. I made this real quick in GIMP and, while it is far from really addressing all the color combinations in TK, I think it does a well enough job showing a pallet of colors that we frequently see.

The only ones that do not show up too well that I notice are orange and pink. We would lose orange, but I don't think pink shows up too well in the current chat anyway - and of course we gain white, which shows up well.

I vote for straight up black... Studies have shown that reading on a black black ground is easier on the eyes.

I'd enjoy TK 22% more if the background were black.

Time to migrate to CC and/or DarkHaven. (Personally, I think the black backgrounds are a bit obnoxious)

I guess I haven't ever considered the white background to be that obnoxious, considering it's framed nicely by dark gray. Also, I do think the settings on your monitor have a large bearing on 'eye fatigue.' Personally, I prefer to keep my contrast from being ridiculously high, and have my brightness set a bit low. That's made a world of difference for me over the years.

Besides, if the background goes gray, my gray font will be nigh invisible.  Embarrassed

Perhaps though, this calls for a "Dark Keep," for those folks that do find the bright white a bit too bright?

RP is a hobby; it is nothing more and nothing less. It is comparable to scrapbooking, model-railroad, gardening, etc. It is a self-indulgent, nigh narcissistic practice that yields no tangible benefits to anyone in any real, practical applications, and serves little more than to justify the egos of those involved, and occasionally impress someone who is equally self-indulgent and narcissistic. Taking it too seriously is a waste of time.

Hmm honestly hopping in on this because I'm for the change myself. Personally the white doesn't bother me but I can see how it could come off as glaring. The Black color is alright I like it but, I think perhaps more of a off-white shade could work. I don't know all the option available, or even if that is viable, though of course.

I'm of the mind that the darker background would be nice. The white hurts my eyes after a while, and eventually I just need to stop looking and go do something else. Never had this problem on CC where the background is black. An option to be able to change the background color might be better for all the people that like the white background, and all the people who need something darker.

I just turn my brightness down whenever my eyes begin to hurt.

Pretty sure that any color gets obnoxious after staring at it for too long. Doubt it's a problem with "white" specifically.

I don't know how I feel about a black background or anything darker. The other chats I used to frequest back in the day were mostly using a pale yellow-orange background. I know a darker background reduces the amount of electricity used for a bright screen by a small amount - however it's up to Webby to change this.

That's why I prefer CC. And it's not going to be "CC" much longer. I believe they're changing the domain name to "DarkNexxus" and are implementing a new chat that's a lot more customizable and with a lot more features than TK or CC right now.

Next time your eyes hurt from staring at tK too long, try stepping away from the computer for awhile.

I do not spend that much time on TK anymore. I have a full time job. Even if I didn't, I'll spend my time the way I want thank you very much.

Then enjoy your eye pain. If your eyes begin to hurt from staring at a computer screen or from playing games too long or something, go stand in the kitchen or the back porch for 10 minutes.

As much as I love TK. I have to admit that the White backround is rather hurtful on the eyes. Black, Light purple or maybe a darker shade of grey would be nice..About time someone braught this subject to the threads..

I'm on tK (and playing video games and doing all manner of other things on my other computer) pretty much from the time I wake up until the time I go to bed. Never had eye pain. Don't mind the background (though it's pretty plain-looking).

So guys looking at TK via the visible portion of the electromagnetic spectrum is kind've tedious and hard on the eyes. We should talk to Rook about shifting it to gamma-vision.

To be perfectly honest....The Black backround is a little easy on the eyes...And you can have MANY colours of fonts and such to change so that you dont complain the whole "Eeew that noob color". I really prefer the darker backrounds...even if it is just a dark grey.

Either way I think the Admin's / Mod's should give TK a chance...give it like...a Week Trial to see how the Backround looks and how people are responding to it you know?. If no one likes it then they will just change it to normal. ya know?

I wouldn't mind black as long as you don't put ugly neon green as the default text color.

Yes....YES!

So anyway the black background gives me migranes. Can't use CC at all for that reason. It physically hurts me. I'm not talking after an hour or so. I'm talking within 5 minutes. No problems whatsoever with tK's current colour. It's not all that severe on my eyes at all.

Though I understand some people wanta a different colour scheme. I'm sure, using a little CSS trickery, we can set it up so you can flick between the two, but the problem with that is that certain colours are simply not readable on black, unless using the same trick, all colours are inverted?
