Curiosity: Xbox, PS
« on: March 12, 2015, 06:43:47 AM »

Ever since I've started working for Xbox, I've come to be quite happy in my PS preference.  The amount of issues I've seen arise for the average user is boggling.  However, I'm sure if I worked PS I'd be hearing plenty of stupidity about it, too.

First of all, DO NOT ANSWER THIS SAYING PC. We get it, we know, PC gaming is amazeballs.  I'm more expressing curiosity over frustrations at the consoles.

So my big question is: What are your biggest consistent gripes about each system?

In my experience, aside from the fact that they break easier, XBox's biggest nuisance point is the addiction to "security" which still doesn't really stop people.  Want to make an account? Well, first you make an email, and then you verify it, and god help you if you're signing your child up, because you have to take ten extra steps and pay a small fee.  Oh, you want to cancel your subscription? Well first let us send you a verification code.  Oh, this is your hotmail from twenty years ago and all the information is invalid? Fill out this form.  Oh, your form information is incorrect? Tough shit.  Oh, you want to log in? We're going to make you verify again.  Is your email a yahoo email?  Sucks for you, yahoo hates our verification codes.  Meanwhile there's just some 11 year old getting blue balled on call of duty.

There also seems to be a disproportionate amount of error codes compared to PS.  I don't think I ever got a single error on PS3.  Meanwhile every turn you get on Xbox has a potential error code.  Not to mention the need to clear your cache, the potential for random shit to go corrupt completely on its own and whatever else.

I've owned many consoles in my years. Mostly I was a sega kid, had access to a Master System 2 and a Megadrive v1. I then had access to a Playstation 1, and bought myself a PS2. Later in life I've owned a DS Lite, a 3ds, a classic Xbox, a 360, a ps3 and now a Ps4. I think I'm mostly a "glorious PC master race member" out of laziness. When I was in a shitty little flat where I had one room that was entirely mine, I had my consoles, tv, pc and everything right near my bed, so if I wanted to play something on the xbox or the ps2, I just turned my chair, turned on the TV, selected the channel and went and played. When I was done or wanted to check on emails or whatever, I just looked to the right and boom I could do that too. Hell I could be on TK and play a game on a console.

Where I am now my PC is in my bedroom, aside from my DS Lite I still own and my 3ds (and my phone), the PS4 is in the other room. which involves getting the fuck up, walking over to, sitting down on my own for ages in front of a tv to play for any protracted amount of time. So if I can get a game on PC, I'd rather do that than get one for console.

Which brings me to my biggest consistent gripes about EVERY console system:

Exclusivity, and Shitty Ports. They are both somewhat related in fact, so I'll rant about them both. Why not.

FUCK Console exclusivity. Seriously. Fuck it with a rake. Why, why, WHY am I forced to shell out for a console just to play the one or two games I really DO want to play? ESPECIALLY when there's no fucking good reason it CANNOT run on a PC? What is the fucking point? Maybe the dev got paid shit-tons of money for X game to exclusively come out on Y console by Y console's parent company, and that is an absolutely great thing for the devs but holding it to ransom like that really IS kinda shitty on the part of said parent company.

I can understand if a game would otherwise never come out (Bayonetta 2 for example, basically only exists because Nintendo helped fund the damn thing, and Demon's Souls as well only came out because Sony took a huge fucking gamble with From Software), and I'm much less Salty (as the kids call it these days) about such a thing. I get that. That's fine, really. I EVEN sorta get timed exclusives (the second Tomb Raider reboot game, whatever it's fucking called, Legend of the Tomb Raider, the Tomb Raider Awakens, The Tomb Raider Strikes Back or whatever I dunno). That's much less shitty than 'HAHA YOU CAN'T HAVE OUR GAME FUCK YOU ALL'. I really just take issue with basically a game being forced to only come out on a console purely because company Z said 'we only want it on our system fuck everyone else here's a shit-ton of money to make you sign this contract'.

And then there's games which are built for consoles and are slated to come out on PC, but the devs make a shitty, shoddy, LAZY port of the game to PCs either at the same time or as an afterthought later. This really pisses me off something chronic. A PC can be many many times better than a console, this is solid fact. It can out-perform even today's consoles with relative ease and not even that much cost, and STILL have better, more precise controls. so WHY, WHY devs, WHY do you refuse to put simple, necessary things like GRAPHICS OPTIONS, MORE THAN 30FPS FRAMERATES, PROPER KEYBOARD AND MOUSE CONTROLS, MOUSE ACCELLERATION OPTIONS, VSYNC, RESOFUCKINGLUTION OPTIONS, MAYBE EVEN A FUCKING FOV SLIDER FOR FUCKS SAKE

WHY is your game full of crippling bugs!? What fucking possessed you to basically just run some shitty script to translate the game from console to pc without fucking QUALITY CHECKING THIS? Did you really throw this game at someone, tell them to change a couple pointers, see if it got to the loading screen within an hour and go 'yeah that'll work ship it whatever'? What fucking planet are you from where that is considered acceptable business practice!?

I get that there's some disparity between coding on a pc and whatever console, especially on things like a PS3 where those Cell processors make things fucking awkward because of how alien they are, or a nintendo DS's ARM processors or whatever... But fuck me today's generation of consoles are basically JUST A PC IN A SHINY CASE, THAT IS ALL. Fuck the Xbone even uses practically off-the-shelf components. And shitty ports are still happening. Step your fucking game up dickheads.

Now as a caveat, I'mma mention Dark Souls: PTE on PC. Yeah it was lumbered with GFWL (UAUGUHHFUCK THAT SHIT) and was buggy as sin and looked ugly as shit on PC. It was the definition of a terrible port, but let's be ENTIRELY honest here. From Software were never intending to do a PC port. they'd NEVER PROGRAMMED FOR PC EVER. EVER. They SAID this. They only did it because all the fans of it BEGGED, PLEADED, PETITIONED for From to port it for PC, and they outright said 'look this IS gonna be a shitty port; we'll do it but don't say we didn't warn you'. And we got what they promised. BUT they also opened it up nice and wide so people could mod it to MAKE it playable. And now it's on Steamworks. :D So that's a GREAT terrible console port. (and it's very telling that because of how wildly successful the pc port was even with all its awfulness, they committed not just to making a port of Dark Souls 2 for pc, but designing it from the GROUND UP as a seperate fork , not just a port, for the PC)

okay, angryrant aside, I am not as "u mad bro" as I might appear. Console Exclusivity is more of a disappointment as opposed to a 'AAGHRHGH FUCK YOUR SHIT' thing for me. I'm disappointed that OlliOlli2 is console only so far. I'm disappointed that the new tomb raider game is a timed exclusive on the Xbone. I'm disappointed that I can't play Bloodborne on my PC and I will never be able to play Bayonetta 1 or 2 on PC either because they all look like great games. I mean I'm getting Bloodborne on PS4 anyway because why the fuck not. From Software are pretty much gold in that respect for me. But it's not something I especially lose sleep over.

The shitty ports though? Just... yeah. fuck that. fuck it with a goddamn chainsaw.

All of the shit you've mentioned so far doesn't matter to me, and I say this as a model member of the demographic that the gaming industry panders to... 18-25 year old casual-to-semiserious gamer of basically all genres... mmo, shooter, moba, deckbuilder, platformer, etc...

All I care about is uh... I don't know the proper terminology... but I'll say "online gameplay connectivity"

I don't want lag. Ever. That's all. And XBL *across the motherfuckin board*, every game I've played, has performed better than PSN.

and yeah I'm not a dipshit that confuses ISP issues for XBL/PSN issues. so don't argue it.

If things magically hit me from 10 feet away from where their weapons end, whilst clipping through each other (and the walls), you better believe it.

edit:

yup, just died to a pitchfork clipping through a solid steel fence to hit me.

While of course, my weapon bounced clean off. GG fromware

Other than that, it's actually not bad so far; the only real complaint I have is that the load times are fucking atrocious.

Ahahahahahaha knew it.

But no seriously the load times are fucking awful. From Software breaking a cardinal rule of superchallenging games there. DON'T STICK US AT A LOADING SCREEN FOR TOO LONG AFTER WE DIE. LET US GET STRAIGHT BACK IN TO TRY AGAIN.

Also when I stick shit in storage the implication is that I do not fucking want it for a while, so when I die DON'T FILL MY INVENTORY WITH IT AGAIN YOU FUCKS. Ugh. seriously.

I do apologise, turns out I don't need to store things. Stuff I pick up like boolits and vials of blood go into storage if I have more than the max automatically. So there's that. I was under the impression they were wasted. herpaderp. Still those load times are bullshit.

PS, because to date the only issue I've had was the freezer bug with Skyrim. Thats 4 systems, thousands of games, and mulitple controllers and controller formats, even one ps1 that had it's own built in screen.... Wish they'd return that idea to process. But no qualms with the PS brand through their solid consoles. The mobiles,.... another story. PSP, good / PS Vita, Shit.

Sega was a nice one for a bit. Not much can be said of it though given it wasn't around long. Less to be said of dreamcast then though.

X Blox, Aka Prop Minecraft bricks that are semi functional in real life! Yeah. Shoddy working systems, freezes, hangs, redlights, bluescreens, red rings of death, and my personal favorite... games that were half made and like aborted mid way, so when played they just get to a spot before insta fail. I can still remember my first edition of Morrowind was on the X Blox, and I loved the game but hated the sudden bomb out of memory and instant freezes the system would destroy me with.(Morag Tong all the way, btw). All in all the "dead eyes, red ring ultimate dragon" isn't keen on my playlists anymore due to the industry standard of using it to shit on loyalists or customers of the microsoft brand in general.

[PSX] and the [X.x; Box] both came out after my mainstays though. Famicom/8bit, Jaguar, Atari, and those grand little shits called 186's. God I still remember games that aren't even on cached run lists anymore. (Dare you to find Dr Spadso, Get Me Out of Here, Lock Out, or Continuum) So many old jokes about Dos<->Spot too.  C:dos ... C:dos\run ... Run\dos\run.
